Bodegas Murviedro chooses Solutions for High Energy Consumption and Poor Lighting Quality

Share

Customer: Murviedro
Location: Valencia, Spain
Sustainability Policy: Climate change is a reality, and reducing CO2 emissions was the main reason Bodegas Murviedro opted for the most efficient lighting system.
Energy Reduction:

  • 90% with Intelligent LED Lighting and the IIoT
  • Warehouse Logistics Corridors – from 45,864 kWh per year to 3,316 kWh per year
  • Bottling and Storage – from 76,877 kWh per year to 3,333 kWh per year

Bodegas Murviedro is committed to organic farming, biodynamic plots, and the reduction of emissions. The maximum reduction of is carbon footprint was one of the reasons the traditional company chose the innovative and industry-leading Genia Global Energy solution to support its sustainability policy.

Efficient Solutions for High Energy Consumption and Poor Lighting Quality

Bodegas Murviedro is a multinational wine company that combines traditional wine production and a commitment to constant innovation in sustainability.

Bodegas Murviedro’s facilities exceed 8,000 m2 covered, and more than 7,000m2 outdoors. The 2,200 m2 warehouse suffered from high energy consumption as well as very poor and irregular lighting with a yellowish hue. Because of these conditions, the company commissioned a Valencian consultant to complete a study and analysis of its lighting.

As a result, improvements were made to the quality and intensity of the lighting; the result was a 90% reduction in energy consumption throughout all areas.

Storage and Bottling

This area had 46 existing 400W bell luminaires installed between 7.5 and 8 meters from floor level.

On-site measurements of the existing lighting were made. Between 80 and 250 lux were measured in the production area, where 300 lux had been projected. While in the storage area, between 70 and 150 lux were measured and 150 had been projected.

In no case were the regulatory requirements set by UNE-EN 12464.1: 2012 and RD 486/97 met by the existing lighting.

A photometric analysis was completed to ensure the new lighting levels complied with regulations. The study of both zones produced the following results:

Iobaric Vessels Storage Room

This area is currently used for warehouse storage and originally had 6 400W luminaires and 14 250W luminaires at a height of 10.5 meters. Seven DLE and 14 CLE were projected and the space went from 20 old luminaires to 21 Digital Lumens luminaires which helped to improve the lighting quality.

The client chose Digital Lumens DLE luminaires in the isobaric areas, which operate at temperatures between -30ºC and + 50ºC and an IP52 rating. In storage areas, the client selected the CLE family which operates at temperatures between -20ºC and + 50ºC and an IP20 rating.

On-site lighting measurements were carried out, and when in photometric design, uniformity was sought and regulations complied within all areas:

  • Production cellar: from 100 to 120 lux on average, to projected 150 lux
  • Cellar aisles of the deposits: from 20 to 80 lux on average, to projected 150 lux
  • Isobaric area 1 (left): from 100 to 300 lux on average, to projected 200 lux
  • Isobaric area 2 (right): from 50 to 150 lux on average, to projected 150 lux

Long Aisle Warehouse Area

The area of seven long aisles of storage and logistics used for food products was the last to be analyzed. With an estimated occupancy ratio in the area of 15%, the savings opportunity was very high.

This area was originally illuminated by rows of six spotlights of 250W sodium vapor lamps in each aisle and 42 sodium vapor lamps 250 W (300W total luminaire consumption).

Photometric studies were carried out and the distribution of Digital Lumens luminaires able to meet the customer’s requirements (100 lux minimum) was planned, at a mounting height of 12 m.

The Digital Lumens CLE luminaire with an IP20 rating was chosen, and the change occurred as follows:

Luminaires
Initial Situation: 42 Bells
Projected: 35 CLE

Installed Potency
Initial Situation: 12.60 kW
Projected: 6.75 kW

Consumption
Initial Situation: 45,864 kWh/year
Projected: 3,316 kWh/year
